Ethnography – Traditional House

The traditional Khmer Loeu house, built from wood and bamboo on stilts, is perfectly adapted to life in a forest environment. It always features a communal terrace serving as a meeting space, accessible by a ladder, and private areas organized according to the tribes. Among the Austronesians, a single house can shelter several families separated by bamboo partitions, with each household having its own fire and utensils. Mon-Khmer houses, often the most decorated, are distinguished by their geometric patterns in woven bamboo, inspired by nature and symbols specific to each tribe.

Ethnography – Khmer Loeu Village

Khmer Loeu villages, often set in a clearing in the heart of the forest, generally bring together 200 to 700 inhabitants. Their organization varies according to the people: the Jarai live in long houses on stilts oriented north-south, while Mon-Khmer peoples build villages in a circle around a communal house. Formerly fortified for protection, these villages are also organized around a water source, a central place for daily life and social gatherings.
